Abstract This article examines the relevance of semantic maps for grammaticalisation studies. It explains that semantic maps are a way to visualize regular relationships between two or more meanings or grammatical functions of one and the same linguistic form. It describes the two types of semantic maps and provides an example of a semantic map for conjunction and related function. It also speculates on the future possibilities of semantic maps for grammaticalisation research.
