Feasibility studies have been carried out at the SYRMEP \nbeamline of the Elettra synchrotron laboratory in Trieste \nwith the aim of demonstrating the advantages and evaluating \nthe effectiveness of synchrotron radiation X-ray \nmicrotomography as a suitable technique for nondestructive \nanalysis of bowed stringed instruments. The \nparticular geometry of the X-ray beam and the use of a \nnovel detector allow structural evaluation of the main \ndetails of the instruments with unprecedented richness \nof details. This, in turn, will allow precise dendrochronological \ninvestigation of historical violins, as well as the \ncharacterization of their structure, defects, wood thickness \nand density.
