Building upon a re-examination of the rock inscriptions of the soldier Tjehemau in the district of Abisko, the present study examines the evidence for the route of Eleventh Dynasty Expansion into Nubia. The inscriptions of Tjehemau, the tableau of Monthuhotep II in the Wadi Schatt er-Rigal, and the Eleventh Dynasty royal inscription from Deir el-Ballas allow a proper understanding of the purpose and mechanics of Eleventh Dynasty interest in Lower Nubia. Together with archaeological remains in the region of Kurkur Oasis, these epigraphic remains reveal the physical route of interactions between the Thebaid and Lower Nubia, and provide the necessary background to the turmoil that threatens to destroy the nascent Middle Kingdom during the reign of Amenemhat I.
