This chapter starts from the observation that the liberal feminist literature on peace and war has focused primarily on the rights of women to participate in national armed forces, and the citizenship issues this entails. The chapter provides an overview of the evolution of women’s military participation in Western democracies. The chapter traces that journey and the complexities it raises for feminists and for liberals more generally, of supporting the ‘right to fight’ whilst also acknowledging that national militaries have often acted to the detriment of women in democratic states and elsewhere.
