This paper discusses the role of scientific controversies in the acquisition of knowledge about psychoanalysis and various psychotherapies. Major controversies in this area include the one between Breuer and Freud in 1895 regarding Studies in Hysteria, the debates between Freud and women analysts about the development of femininity in the 1920s, the conflict between Melanie Klein and Anna Freud that played out within the British Psychoanalytic Society from 1941 to 1945, or the one between Kleinians and Lacanians in Rio de la Plata in the 1970s.This paper examines the relativity of truth in the human being’s interior reality, the difficulty of making the subconscious an object of study when, by definition, it is precisely what no one wants to know anything about! This paper also discusses the usefulness of laying the groundwork for argument and fomenting discussion about the very principles on which the different psychoanalytic theories are based.
