Abstract This article examines the built environment of urban Babylonia based on cuneiform evidence. It describes the experience of urban living from the point of view of the people who were the ordinary inhabitants of Babylon and the other cities of southern Mesopotamia, and contrasts their perspective with the high-level ideals projected by the ruler. It discusses the writings of the common people about the city.
