This paper starts with a comparative analysis of fertility change and policies in both countries. The author also examines the spatial patterns of sex ratio differentials which are indeed quite different in China and India. To do that the author will provide sex ratio maps for China and India and estimate the magnitude of local changes in child sex ratio values between the last two censuses. The paper concludes with a discussion related to the nature of the mechanisms at work in the degradation observed in both countries followed by a brief explanation of some of the possible factors behind the spatial patterning of sex ratio differentials and trends observed both in China and India.
