The Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art was one of the very few non-controversial projects sponsored by the late Viscount Cherwell. The cachet conferred by the enthusiasm of the distinguished patron and adviser was quickly reinforced by very real esteem for the laboratory's achievements in the development and application of new scientific techniques for the study of antiquities.
