Base of the pyramid research has leveraged contributions from existing entrepreneurship theory. But how might the increasing scholarly interest in the base of the pyramid (BoP) domain contribute to enhancing entrepreneurship theory? We argue that the differences between ToP of the Pyramid (ToP) and BoP resource environments reveal the boundary conditions of entrepreneurship theory developed in a context of abundance. We consider how this can impact two extant theories of entrepreneurial success, the Liability of Newness and the Liability of Foreignness. We offer a set of research questions to help elaborate how variation between BoP and ToP environments affects extant theoretical constructs and propositions. These research questions offer a framework for further inquiry over short- and long-term time frames. We propose that because of the unique contrasts between paucity and plenty in the ToP and BoP, BoP research can more directly contribute to entrepreneurship theory now and in the future.
