This chapter introduces the concept of digital capital, which is crucial to understanding the varying degrees of digital engagement. It provides an overview of Bourdieu’s concept of capital and how this can be extended and adapted to a digital context. The concept of digital capital has been used in various contexts. Some scholars use similar notions to describe the aptitude for digital technologies, such as techno-capital or digital readiness. There are precursors of digital engagement that define an individual’s digital ecology. This is the digital capital that influences how people adopt and use digital technologies, creating yet another rift between those who benefit from technologies and those who do not. Situating technologies within the context of social practices is crucial for a better understanding of how they influence users and society.
