In a recent paper summarizing the pre historic distribution of obsidian in Iowa, Ander son et al. (1986) show that the majority of this material was imported from quarry sources in the vicinity of Obsidian Cliff, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. The trace element compositions of eight of the 31 specimens in their sample, however, did not match any of the known parent obsidian sources in the local inventory. Specifically, they identified three distinctive glass types (termed A [n = 67, S'7n = 1 y, and C'7n = 1 J) for which they could specify no geographic source counterpart, but speculated that these un known sources likely were located in the Yellowstone area. Recent x-ray fluorescence analyses of obsidians from eastern Idaho and southwestern Montana have identified one of the unknown sources.
