When the quality of a product degrades, the tightened inspection and discontinuation features of MIL-STD-105D can be used to motivate a producer to improve. The probability of acceptance for a given quality is smaller under tightened inspection than under normal inspection. In addition, if tightened inspection continues beyond a specified number of lots, inspection can be discontinued and the product not accepted until the producer demonstrates improved quality. The effect on average outgoing quality when the producer reacts to these pressures and improves his quality during tightened inspection is analyzed. The results demonstrate that MIL-STD-105D has feedback properties which tend to limit the worst average outgoing quality without relying on the mechanism of screening rejected lots.
