Research backgroundThe Digital Archive of Queensland Architecture is a multi-media presentation of oral history interviews, transcripts, and images documenting architects and their work in the period 1945-1975. Analytic features allow users to establish connections between persons, places and building types. The Archive was originally built for the purposes of the ARC Linkage Grant Architectural Practice in Post War Queensland: building and interpreting an Oral History Archive. The core of the Archive consists of 70 interviews, transcribed and tagged for relationship and timeline mapping. It is also a repository for thousands of images of buildings and drawings. The Archive is now an on-going digital infrastructure platform publically available and growing through scholarly research and crowd sourcing.Research contributionThe interviews are unique records of the lives, beliefs and achievements of the architects of the post WWII period. The guided by the researchers the interviews provide a ground up history of the period which has been previously vastly under researched. The oral history methodology and the features of the Archive which allow connections between persons, firms, projects and places are innovations in the methodology of architectural history and in database design.Research significanceThe research collected in the Archive was fundamental to the book Hot Modernism (Macathur et al, 2015) and the associated Exhibition Hot Modernism (van der Plaat et al) 2014. The Archive is widely used by scholars and the public and has become a key research tool for the Queensland Dept of Environment and Heritage. The Archive along with the book and exhibition won the Queensland National Trust’s John Herbert Award in 2017.https://qldarch.net
