Artistically naive college students given minimal training categorized color slides of paintings of four nineteenth century artists according to individual artistic style. Students responded non-verbally on a ten-point rating scale, allowing us to describe the degree of perceived style similarity or dissimilarity among the artists and to note perceived style variations among the works of each artist. Students also reported the specific properties that they considered characteristic of each artist's work. From these nonverbal and verbal data we have drawn some inferences about effective teaching of artistic style.
