Dale Nelson, and Fernando Calderon provided indispensable help in carrying out the interviews for the survey of settlement formation.This survey would not have been possible had it not been for the willingness of present and past community leader.s in the settlements to devote many hours of their time to responding to numerous detailed questions about how their communities were formed.Officials in government offices concerned with problems of housing, as well as private individuals who had worked in this area, also provided valuable assistance.In particular, the staff of the Oficina de Barrios Marginales of the Junta Nacional de la Vivienda and Marcia Koth de Paredes of PLANDEMET generously shared data on squatter settlements and insights on
