The chapter takes as its starting point the notion that journalists’ safety is a \nprecondition for free expression and free media. Based on interviews and discussions \nwith experienced female war and confl\nict journalists from seven countries worldwide, \nthe discussion evolves around questions linked to \nwhat particular challenges and \nopportunities women journalists face, and how their security can best be ensured \nwhen covering war and conflict zones. \nThe deli\nberations are believed to have a direct \nbearing on debates about \nfemale \njournalists’ safety online and offline, the importance \nof the presence of female journalists covering wars and conflicts, and how their being \nthere may serve as an indicator of freedom\nof expression, civil rights and media \nfreedom in general.
