Podemos and the Ideals of Populist Proceduralism

Abstract

This article examines the rise of populism in post-2008 Spanish political culture. Using the case of the political party Podemos, whose populist rhetoric and structures were borrowed from movements in Latin America, the article challenges recent general theories of populism by liberal European political theorists, which purport to account for all forms of populism. The article argues that such theories can only convincingly account for right-wing populism and not for left-wing versions such as Podemos. It ends by examining what I call Podemos' "populist proceduralism," the idea of institutionalizing egalitarian assembly-like structures in order to produce mass political participation.
