[Making chaos. Suburban politics as urban management regimes and democratic games] Activists engaged in the organization Megafonen caused a great deal of “chaos”, as they called it themselves, within the urban development project “Järvalyftet” in Husby, a suburb of Stockholm. Departing from theories of how consent to an unequal order is established on factory shop floors, the purpose of Nazem Tahvilzadeh and Lisa Kings’s article is to develop concepts which make visible the political order established in peripheral neighbourhoods: urban management regimes and democratic games. The article investigates how Megafonen’s exit and voiced criticism of Järvalyftet breached against the established political order of relations between the state and civil society in the urban peripheries. The activists’ actions were thus regarded as “scandalous” by segments of the political establishment. Megafonen refused to play according to the rules of the game and made visible the inequalities of urban managements regimes and their democratic games with the citizens. The empirical material is based on a process-tracing and ethnographic methodology which re-creates the suburban political venture Järvalyftet and its inner logics as well as the role of Megafonen between 2006 and 2013.
