This chapter probes the question of what defines the construct of advanced-level L2 phonology. By investigating phonological knowledge and skill in production and perception, both segmental and prosodic domains are explored. While there is no single hallmark of ‘advanced’ phonology, it is argued that L2 learners can definitely acquire new knowledge and new skills. Future L2 phonology research should recognize that the native-likeness benchmark is not the only one, but should also adopt the comprehensibility benchmark of assessing and defining advanced L2 phonology.
