A pervasive concept in social science is that one’s basic personality and worldview stabilizes by the time one reaches adulthood. Mannheim was one of the first to posit the import of studying people as a member of a generation, as they are “in a position to experience the same events and data,” especially if individuals had similar experiences during the course of development. 2 While Mannheim’s work has been called “the seminal theoretical treatment of generations as a sociological phenomenon,” much of its application has been within the realm of sociology. 3 Does one’s chronological age shape the recall of national and world events? Does this impact national values and behavior that varies across generations? These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
