Studies on multilingualism have a rather shady past. Till recently many studies in the field viewed the phenomena of individual or societal multilingualism as a matter of human adjustment, and confined their enquiries to the problems such as accounting for interference in second language acquisition, and for the distortionism, resulting from language contact such as hybridization, pidginization, and so on. This paper examines these phenomena in detail from the point view of societal bilingualism and plurilingualism in India and Pakistan.
