Ed. note: The following is one imaginative approach to the illusive job of teaching refer ence. It has a number of implications. The first is the obvious: How well are library schools training reference librarians (or, if you will, subject bibliographers, information science gurus)? The second: What might be done by teachers to improve the level of teaching? These questions are heard often enough at meetings of teachers, but the so called feedback from librarians is fairly neg ligible. Will readers who are working in the nitty gritty aspects of reference work please com ment? Letters, articles, or notes on p slips are welcome. I'd like to receive enough replies to turn over several pages to the whole prob lem?a problem restated: How can we best train reference librarians?
