Youth and crime

Abstract

Juvenile crime is constantly in the news. Hardly a week passes without reports in the press of some serious, and usually violent, act which has been committed by youth. Football hooliganism, vandalism, violence in schools, mugging, gang fights and riots have all hit the headlines and provoked some official pronouncement expressing anxiety about the escalation of crimes of violence. Since the Second World War hardly a year has gone by without the publication of the official criminal statistics being greeted with both alarm and fear of a seemingly ever growing number of Vicious young criminals’ who are making the streets unsafe for law abiding citizens.
