This article critically compares transformational leadership and ethical leadership. It discusses the differences, similarities, weaknesses and strengths of the two styles. The importance of strong leadership in meeting an array of challenges and changes occurring in the NHS is highlighted. The article explores the influence of transformational and ethical leadership styles on the role of nurse leaders, particularly those in mental health, and also the influence of emotional intelligence in leadership.
