Worldwide an increasing number of public libraries are being located in, or close to, shopping centres in recognition of the very large numbers of people which good libraries attract, the mutual benefit to retailers and libraries of colocation, and the parking convenience for library users and shoppers. The literature is reviewed and recent case studies of libraries in NSW shopping centres are examined, with views from public librarians, an architect, centre managers and shop owners. The opportunities and challenges of this form of public library development are assessed. Edited version of a paper presented at 'Places and spaces: public libraries for the 21st century in Australia and New Zealand' Adelaide South Australia 31 March - 1April 2006.
