“The Colloquy of Myrddin/Merlin and Taliesin” is a Welsh prophetic dialogue between the two legendary poet‐prophets, Merlin and Taliesin, contained in the Black Book of Carmarthen (Llyfr Du Caerfyrddin). The poets lament battles past and future, including an attack by Maelgwn Gwynedd on Dyfed, and the battle of Arfderydd (c. 573) featuring the seven sons of Elffin and referencing Gofannon. There is, however, no mention of Gwenddolau, Rhydderch Hael, Gwenddydd, or Gwasawg, usually associated with Merlin's legend and Arfderydd, at which Merlin became a visionary. The poem probably predates Geoffrey of Monmouth and his treatment of Merlin and is the earliest extant Welsh prophetic poem.
