This article reports on the development of a comprehensive, multi-dimensional measurement instrument of entrepreneurial success. Two studies are presented. The first study is a qualitative investigation of entrepreneurs’ own definitions of entrepreneurial success, collected in face-to-face interviews with 243 business owner-managers. Five dimensions of entrepreneurial success emerged including workplace relationships, company performance, personal fulfillment, community impact, and personal financial rewards. Study two develops a questionnaire to measure these five dimensions using a second, independent sample of 184 German owner-managers. Confirmatory factor analysis supports the proposed factor structure of the multidimensional subjective success measure. Furthermore, we provide evidence for the validity of SES-IS (subjective entrepreneurial success scale – importance) against a number of criteria.
