Geography education is important preparation for work in a broad array of private and public sector organizations. Career opportunities are growing and diversifying internationally for geographers as demand rises for geographic expertise and skills. At the same time, geography students will encounter challenges, initially from the job search and then in securing a position and learning how to practice geography in varied workplaces with markedly different cultures and expectations of professional work. To gain a better understanding of the requirements of the modern world of work, researchers have begun to define and measure the competencies of academic and nonacademic professionals in geography. Beyond employment, geography education provides people with the intellectual, moral, and existential capabilities necessary for lifelong learning, economic and social agency in citizenship, and the pursuit of personal wellbeing. Such geographic capabilities may well be shared internationally despite the considerable differences in the content of geography in schools and universities.
