This research examines patterns of cruise travel through the Canadian Arctic between 1984-2008 with an emphasis on shore visits to the northern National Parks of Sirmilik, Auyuittuq and Quttinirpaaq.Given the warming effects of climate change, we investigate claims regarding accelerated growth of cruise tourism in Arctic Canada, and the implications this anticipated 'growth' may have for northern National Parks. We also caution that as the transition to an ice-free Arctic summer continues, the prevalence of hazardous, multi-year ice conditions likely will continue to have negative implications for cruise travel in the Canadian Arctic, and in particular for tourist transits through the Northwest Passage and High Arctic regions.
