Goldoni's comedies are overtly moralizing, in line with the Enlightenment context within which he worked. The particular system of morality informing the plays is crucial in shaping all aspects of his dramatic representation of gender. Morality is frequently included in the formulaic encomium to the dedicatee. The golden Enlightenment rules of moderation and morality are reiterated alongside the primacy of reason in the dedications, prefaces and plays. Goldoni's dedications and prefaces to the plays, as well as his important reform of Italian theatre, bear witness to his belief in what he saw as the importance of the moral role of theatre in society. Goldoni's theatre is to provide femininity with instruction on how to live according to patriarchal rules and avoid transgression. Femininity is specifically idealized in terms of the three cardinal patriarchal virtues of chastity, modesty and domesticity. The chapter discusses both young men and young women, can benefit from moral lessons imparted in a theatrical context.
