One of the important problems of archeology is the understanding of the interrelationships between the stylistic behavior of material items and the structure of the sociocultural systems within which these items were produced and in which they found their function. Although this should be a problem of general anthropological interest, it is of particular concern to archeology, which is dependent for much of its interpretation on the analysis of style. In developing methods for the analysis of style in archeological materials, therefore, it has generally proved useful and efficient to adopt a simple rule of thumb rather than to establish any rigorous definition. A number of different classes of attributes composed these lists. Certain morphologically variable features of the sherds were included, such as lip profile and collar shape. The development, through relative isolation, of stylistic variations more characteristic of individual villages than of a total style horizon or ceramic type has been demonstrated.
