Today's rapidly changing society demands innovative ways of educating engineering and design students to create sustainable social impact. As a response, the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) recently formed the Humanitarian Engineering, Entrepreneurship, and Design (HEED) - a university-wide research and design group that aims to engage faculty, students and relevant stakeholders in a collaborative effort to effectively bring technological solutions to underserved communities. Pioneered by the College of Engineering (COE) and the College of Fine Arts (CFA), the group's pilot activity is HEED 2017 - the first Humanitarian Engineering Symposium and Workshop Series held last July 2017. The event served as an introduction to the field of humanitarian engineering for around 100 participants, most of whom were faculty and students from the COE and CFA's Industrial Design program. A few months after HEED 2017, the group partnered with the UP College of Social Work and Community Development (CSWCD) to tap their experience in community engagement, thus ensuring that a proper and sustainable approach is employed when reaching out to underserved communities. This paper discusses in detail how radical collaboration between three colleges that were once “worlds apart” was established, its current projects, and how it envisions to duplicate the HEED model to higher education institutions throughout the Philippines.
