This chapter explores the concept of values of cultural heritage, combining cultural and economic approaches. Its goal is to clarify this concept to be able to identify the appropriate methodologies and tools to assess heritage values as part of an integrated and sustainable conservation process. The values that are attributed to cultural heritage are contingent and are not objective in nature. They are “produced” by the interaction of the object with its surroundings and are not intrinsic to it. They cannot be understood if no reference is made to the social, historic, political, and cultural context.
