This chapter examines continuities and discontinuities in the changes that have affected Czech and Slovak women since that time. Women’s equality can be defined either as a formal equality of opportunity or as a substantive equality of outcome. The egalitarian standard against which persons are to be measured can entail equal, differential, or pluralistic treatment. The duty of mutual maintenance expired after divorce, but if one of the divorced partners could not be gainfully employed, the court could order alimony payments for up to five years after the divorce. The ideological push to keep women at home is unlikely to succeed, however, because it will collide with the continuing economic need for women to contribute to the family income. Women with post-secondary education in professional and managerial occupations can be expected to derive greater satisfaction from work than their less skilled sisters, and for that reason alone are less likely to withdraw voluntarily from the work force.
