A revised and refined chronology for the Middle Stone Age is proposed on the basis of new data from Border Cave. It is shown that some of the modern man remains found there are in certain association with levels dating back to the Last Interglacial. This finding leads us to postulate a Presapiens scheme of human evolution in which the savannas of sub-Saharan Africa are seen as the area where anatomically modern Homo sapiens originated at some as yet uncertain time prior to ~ 110 kyr B.P.
