The article deals with the functions of disguising as a bear during the Mordovian wedding. The author traces the origins of the disguise tradition in the bear cult of the Middle Volga region peoples, which can be found in the artefacts of the forest zone tribes of the Eneolithic age: flint sculpture images, ornaments and ritual objects made of bone, copper-smelting products.
