Dogmatic florilegia are anthologies of excerpts from dogmatic patristic writings and other related texts, compiled for two main reasons: doctrinal education and religious controversy. This chapter discusses the categories of florilegia proposed and arranged by M. Richard, under the principle stated by H.M. Rochais in the first section of the entry “Florilèges Spirituels” of the DSp. Richard has distinguished florilegia into two categories: dogmatic and spiritual. Spiritual florilegia are divided by Richard into Damascenian florilegia, sacro-profane florilegia, and monastic florilegia. Compared with manuscript collections of theological works, Byzantine florilegia are both narrower and wider: narrower in sense that they usually include short excerpts from entire works, although it is possible to find among the florilegia contents an integral work; wider because the names and titles included are in many instances more than what is preserved or what we know as works under the name of a particular author.
