Scholars and practitioners agree that mobilization of resources by resource-poor founders to execute on a promising opportunity is a defining characteristic of entrepreneurship. A vast scholarly literature examines the phenomenon of entrepreneurial resource mobilization using very diverse (and hence siloed) theoretical perspectives. Our comprehensive review organizes this empirical literature through a framework that emphasizes two key theoretical dimensions: the logics underlying resource search/access and the formality of governance over the use of mobilized resources. Our parsimonious yet rich framework offers a novel vantage point to organize and integrate disparate extant research, identify important gaps in our knowledge and suggest future research directions. Given the dramatic changes underway in present-day resource mobilization efforts through online platforms and accelerators, our review provides conceptual clarity on understanding the fundamental processes involved.
