Connaître, découvrir, communiquer (to get to know, to discover, to communicate) are words from the XIX century French physicist and astronomer François Arago who discovered the chromosphere of the sun and laws of light polarization. These words describe the primary principles that govern the day-to-day working life of all successful scientists. Whilst the first two of these are often attributed and dependent upon innate qualities of the researcher, arguably these attributes are wasted if we fail to communicate. Scientific discourse, the publication, consequent scrutiny and reproduction, or not, by others—is essential in the marching forward of scientific discovery. The elements of this discourse undoubtedly enable an innovative and progressive society, but success of the communication pathway is dependent upon the high quality and reliability of discoveries. Responsibility for the latter of course lies with the authors of the manuscripts but the process of discourse is reliant upon the judgement and wisdom of the editors of the journals that publish the work, as well as the publishers.
