Following on from previous qualitative studies conducted o the nature of children and young people’s experience of sport clubs (see for example, Kirk & MacPhail, 2003; MacPhail, Gorley & Kirk, 2003; Light, 2006) this paper reports on a study conducted in a French swimming club that inquired into the factors shaping children’s decisions to join it and the aspects of their experiences that kept them in their club. Adopting a qualitative approach, the first author spent three months in a French swimming club generating data through noted observations, questionnaires, and interviews with swimmers and coaches. In contrast to studies that look into barriers and reasons for drop out in junior sport (see for example, Butcher Lindner & Johns, 2002; Dwyer, Allison, Goldenberg, Fein, Yoshida & Boutler, 2006) it focuses on what attracted the participants to their swimming club and the positive aspects of being in it that keep them in it.
