Journalism no longer considers the audience as a single entity, but as active users or as a community. These changing notions reflect an increasing orientation toward the audience and a widening of audience participation. In this context, community engagement is considered a special form of user involvement that takes place across each and every phase of the newsmaking process and is intended not only to foster a mutuality between journalists and users, but to also promote relationships and exchange between the users themselves. The motivations for journalism's community engagement range from strategic‐economic considerations to more normative ones that regard “serving a community” as a fundamental responsibility for the field. Journalistic practices related to increased audience participation and engagement have also led to the emergence of specialized editorial roles for these purposes, including the social media editor.
