Abstract It is almost axiomatic that for an event or situation to be stressful it must be apprehended or perceived by the organism. From this perspective, environmental challenge is thought to be mediated largely via perceptual processes; in tum, these perceptual processes are hypothesized to be influential with respect to health and well-being. Most generally stated, then, stress emerges from the perceptual inter face between world and person, the product of which is related to subsequent susceptibility to disorder. Additionally and more practically, the pivotal position of perception in stress theory helps explain individual differences in stress responses and outcomes.
