The pyramidal support and intervention model is designed, as stated earlier, to revive and reinforce the primary family carer’s creative caring powers and rebuild their capacity for containment and empathy. The art therapist as supervisor takes on the role of ‘environmental mother’. She/he teaches the carer some of the techniques and ‘trade secrets’ of art therapy and provides dynamic supervision, both as an alternative to the lost means of communication, and as an act of support and empowerment to the carer. The introduction of shared artwork had done want it was intended to—expand the space between the relative with dementia and her family carer. Both the family member with dementia and the carer move between representations of death and life. Artwork materials—such as watercolours and a paintbrush moving across paper, music, and movement in space—serve as alternative representations of life.
