The stimulus for this paper arises from a re-reading of a thought-provoking, but ultimately rather annoying work, Patricia Cox’s Biography in Late Antiquity: A quest for the Holy Man , 1 composed some decades back now. This work, as I say, has much to commend it, but there are some aspects of her treatment of the subject that disturb me, particularly as they seem to represent a tendency in modern literary criticism, and it is on those that I would like to base my remarks here.
