A key motif of postmodernism is a spirit of nostalgia, which entails the recapturing of experiences of the past, with a view to appropriation in changed circumstances. Nostalgia for older hymns, for a past experience of faith (if not the old structure of faith) and the aesthetic enjoyment of hymns as works of art, are acknowledged. Reception theories, according to which texts offer diverse possibilities for interpretation in various times, contributed to the realisation that traditional hymns can receive new or renewed meaning by different users, and thus be contemporary in changed times. Potential for the conservation and restoration of older, traditional hymns is therefore opened up. Traditional hymns are part of the collective cultural memory of a community. Conserving the traditional, older hymns can keep the hymnic memory alive.
