Abstract

Summary Adler’s relationship to socialism The biographical and theoretical connections between Adler and the Austrian Social Democratic movement are well-known and well-documented. Since his childhood, Adler was involved in these circles, writing for them and working on the reform politics of the so-called »Red Vienna «. Thus, socialism/Marxism was one of the starting points of Adlerian Psychology. This paper sketches the biographical stages of Adler’s relationship with socialism in Vienna and the debates and theories of Adler’s supporters, who wanted to use a combination of Adlerian Psychology and Marxism for their socialist movement towards a humanitarian society. This source of Adlerian Psychology has not that much impact today, but in my opinion, it is nevertheless of essential importance.
