This article studies how Bishop Theodulf of Orleans thought about the ministerial and the universal priesthood in the general context of a reform and renewal of the Carolingian church. The sources used for this study were the De ordine baptismi and the capitularies of Theoldulf. In these texts, the bishop discusses, or uses, two quotations from the scriptures that contain the idea of a universal priesthood - Apocalypse 1, 6 and I Peter 2, 9. He resolves the contradiction raised by the historical and institutionalised form adopted by christian priesthood since antiquity. He defends the existence of a ministerial priesthood, albeit without rejecting the idea of a priesthood of all christians, which he confined to the offering of good works as sacrifices made to God.
