For the adjustment of the North American horizontal control networks in 1927, the observed quantities were only approximately reduced to the reference ellipsoid. The difference betwen the ellipsoid and the geoid was not taken into account. In this paper, the proper procedures for reducing the observed quantities to the ellipsoid are discussed. The errors in the Canadian national network, owing to the use of the adopted approximate reductions, are then analyzed.
