The assessment of the recent show at the Louvre and its accompanying catalogue, Un rêve d’Italie: la collection du marquis Campana (‘A dream of Italy: the Marquis Campana’s collection’), vindicates the assertion that the disposal of the marquis’s collection was the ‘sale of the century’. This is due not only to its significance in Europe but also to the stature and sway of the individuals who put it together and who negotiated its dispersal. The scope and repercussions of this transfer of core parts of Italian cultural heritage to nascent art galleries and museums in London, Paris and St Petersburg is unique in the history of collecting. The organizers of this project have taken up the challenge of a first general assessment of the entire Campana collection, of which the largest part (more than 10,000 objects in total) was acquired by the French state in 1861 and today is held largely by the Louvre in Paris.
