The anatomy of job loss

Abstract

There are, then, many ways that jobs can be lost, many ways in which the dem ands of production for profit can lead to employment decline. The methodological aim of this study has been to take an im­ portant, and an apparently simple, phenomenon, employment decline, and to disentangle some of its complexity. We have tried to show how the causes lying behind this phenomenon may be many and varied, and we have examined some, but by no means all, of the possible mechanisms. We have also tried to show how these different causal mechanisms may in turn have different implications, in terms of both economic processes and geographical patterns.
